Creating Waves9/15/2018 Visual Art and Design:
In light of Hurricane Florence traveling down the East coast of the Carolinas, let’s talk about how difficult it is to paint the perfect wave. Using the word perfect lightly, seeing as nothing is truly ‘perfect’ by everyone’s standard, the first step to painting a desirable wave it to understand the makings of water in general. Let’s assume you already know that part, and if not, you have plenty of time to learn it. When painting waves, one must use lighting to their advantage. Ensuring the proper direction and liveliness of the water resembles the desired wave. Remember that even though you are painting water, a wave is never truly smooth. Made up of many smaller waves, the appearance often resembles miniature peaks. Give way to movement and freedom in your painting. If you cannot be directly in front of water in order to watch the waves and be reminded, know that depending on the opaqueness of the water, you will see below shallow waves and through tall waves. If your painting includes the edge of the beach, be mindful that the color of the sand will be included beneath the glossy water of the first wave of your ocean. If you are painting an image that is further out and does not include the beach, remember the higher the wave is, the more likely you will see the image of the sky through it. Bring all the elements of the ocean into your painting. Light, wind, sand, water, and breeze. All of these will boost your painting and help you create the image you desire.
