Today, we’ll be returning to our series where we shine a spotlight on local businesses in the Charleston area. As a business based in the Charleston area, we are always looking for ways to highlight the amazing people of our area. We hope this introduces you to some new businesses in the area that you can support. The business we will be highlighting today is The Breast Place, a women’s wellness center in North Charleston. The Breast Place is all about empowering women and providing hope through wellness and beauty. If you want to learn more about what this fantastic business has to offer, you’re in the right place! Let’s get started. The Breast Place was opened in 2011 by Dr. Jennifer Beatty in order to fulfill her vision of a center dedicated to breast cancer research, treatment, and education. As a Lieutenant Commander serving in the U.S. Navy and the Director of the Breast Clinic at the Charleston Naval Hospital from 2005 to 2009, Dr. Beatty became interested in breast diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Beatty is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Surgery and is certified in oncoplastic surgery, Hidden Scar™ and laser treatments. She works alongside two physician’s assistants and a women’s health nurse practitioner to care for women of all ages and backgrounds. According to their website, The Breast Place “provides hope through wellness and beauty for women facing life’s challenges.” This wellness center has a team that specializes in both malignant and benign breast disease. They offer breast imaging services including ultrasounds and MRIs, and although they do not perform mammograms on-site, they work with other facilities in the area to order, schedule, and follow up on mammograms for their patients. They encourage women to schedule a consultation for a clinical breast exam and imaging recommendations. Additionally, The Breast Place offers genetic testing. Genetic testing reviews a panel of known genes that are related to cancer diagnosis, such as the BRCA genes, which are genetic mutations linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. This detection as well as taking a look at family history can help individuals prepare for the future and make informed decisions about their care. In 2019, Dr. Beatty realized that there was not enough emphasis on the survivorship of those diagnosed with breast cancer. Because of this, The Breast Place opened up an aesthetic and wellness clinic called Empower. This clinic, located within the wellness center, offers a variety of services including scar revision, facial rejuvenation, laser hair removal, body contouring, dermal fillers and more. Some of these treatments address issues such as fine lines and wrinkles and pigmentation issues. Treatments such as Secret RF, a microneedling device with radio frequency, address common signs of aging as well as correct the appearance of scars and stretchmarks. Their goal by offering these non-invasive services is to help women look and feel their best by boosting their confidence, especially after changes made to their body due to aging or cancer treatment. The providers at The Breast Place are also lactation specialists with firsthand knowledge of the difficulties of breastfeeding. Many women experience issues with breastfeeding, including clogged ducts, mastitis, pain, nipple bleeding or cracking, and fungal infections. The Breast Place provides consultations, latch evaluations, and support for all of these issues. Also provided are oncoplastic surgery services. Oncoplastic surgery is a type of surgery for breast cancer patients that is aimed at improving cosmetic outcomes. This may or may not include reconstruction. The Breast Place uses the Hidden Scar approach, which places an incision in a location that is hard to see. This ensures that the scar will not be visible when it heals. They provide nipple sparing mastectomies, which leaves most of the healthy breast skin as well as the nipple and areola in place. The medical providers at The Breast Place are also trained and certified in natural reconstruction, implant repair, and breast lifts and reductions. The most recent addition to their service lineup is pelvic floor therapy using the EMSELLA chair, an innovative and non-surgical treatment for incontinence. Incontinence is a loss of bladder control that can be brought on by childbirth, menopause, or the natural aging process. Additionally, some medications taken by breast cancer patients induce early menopause, which can lead to incontinence. It is estimated that over 19 million women in the United States suffer from incontinence, and The Breast Place is determined to educate people about the issue as well as offer non-invasive treatment. EMSELLA uses electromagnetic energy to stimulate the pelvic floor region, rehabilitating weak pelvic muscles and restoring neuromuscular control. A single treatment takes about 30 minutes, and patients can receive the treatment fully clothed, avoiding the discomfort of undressing in an exam room. One painless treatment is the equivalent of doing 12,000 Kegel exercises! This month, they have also introduced EMSCULPT NEO, a body contouring treatment. This device uses synchronized radiofrequency and high intensity focused electromagnetic energies to heat a treatment area. This damages fat cells and removes them from the body as well as strengthens muscles. So not only can you sculpt your body and remove unwanted fat, but you can also build muscle while you do it! A single 30 minute treatment is equivalent to doing thousands of muscle contractions. The Breast Place offers skincare products for purchase at their office, and they can also ship them to your door! Brands include EltaMD, Environ Skincare, and iS Clinical. These sunscreens, lotions, serums, and moisturizers address skin concerns and keep skin looking youthful while providing a layer of protection. iS Clinical in particular helps prepare the skin for radiation, as well as treat conditions like eczema. In addition to purchasing products, you can also contact the Empower clinic for a skincare consultation. Their knowledgeable staff can help you choose products that suit your skin type. As you can see, The Breast Place and its Empower clinic offer a wide variety of treatments and services. Whether you are a woman who has battled cancer, has seen changes in your body due to natural aging or childbirth, or you just want to feel your best, the licensed professionals at The Breast Place are eager to provide you with the tools you need for empowerment. They are dedicated to listening, treating, and making life more hopeful. We encourage you to check out their website to see their full range of services and learn more about them!
